Why it's Cooler to Study in the Library: New A/C and More!

After a year and a half of dedicated work on the part of university administration, especially by David Streid, MUM's Chief Administrative Officer, we have air conditioning in MUM library. The new unit is more energy efficient. Come in and enjoy a cool and quiet study atmosphere. We also have a new carpet, quiet study areas (study carrels in quite parts of the library, many with computers, or you can usually find a pleasant study area in our solarium in the north lounge, surrounded by pretty awesome plants). We also offer wi-fi (password: wifi-net), organic candy, and filtered drinking water, as well as a collection of great summer reading among the 140,000 books held by the library.

Library professionals are usually available to help you plan and research your paper, or you can call to make an appointment: Reference Librarian Martin Schmidt is at x3733, and Suzanne Vesely, the Director, is at 472-1148. In Martin's and Suzanne's absence, Bill Vesely, Rustin Larson, and Heidi Salmonson are also available for help with research, and Peter Freund is available for advice about Maharishi Vedic Science-related projects. For more information about the staff qualifications (all have at least one advanced degree), visit another link "About Us" in the left bar of the home page or go to http://mum.edu/library-about-us.

Even if you get good help from these experts, be sure not to overlook the 2-5 minute tutorial videos prepared by Martin for our website at http://mum.edu/library-tutorials, which includes both basic tutorials for our site and advanced help in using our databases, including our online catalog of books and videos. There are a lot of great tips in those videos.

The link to "Get Help" in the left hand bar of the library home page (http://mum.edu/library) has many other resources as well. Either use this link and look over the left bar choices, or use this link to get help: http://mum.edu/get-help.

We are open to the public during the summer from 4:00 pm-7:15 pm.

Have a great summer of study and fun!

More on the Preservation of Ancient Vedic Manuscripts

A Kickstarter Project initiated by our Tape Librarian, Dr. Peter Freund, raised enough money to crowdsource the preservation of many ancient vedic documents that are one of a kind, only available in an unusual manuscript written on palm leaves. To read Dr. Peter Freund's account of activities so far, including the discovery of a "Rosetta Stone" for the Grantha manuscript and subsequent transcription of the Vedic texts, visit his article on Kickstarter called "Learning Grantha, Exploring Atreya Shiksha and new Manuscript Holdings." Congratulations to Peter and his group of dedicated student researchers for their outstanding work! And please consider supporting this project.

As part of the Library Grand Opening, Invincible America Assembly member Sarah Baron installed her amazing and extremely varied work in the Library west foyer. Sarah, originally from Argentina, reports that her work is founded in her long experiences of practicing the TM-Sidhi Program, and that she uses her background in computer programming to help her create the varied expressions and nuances that she wants: "The more I pull the more I get.../Dot dot dot and more dot dot dot./Straight up to the 9th becomes a line. / Dot is a line and line is a dot."

Below is a portion of one painting, of playful horses. Sarah also has fun with people images, landscapes, and collages. She has a video on YouTube that was created by her beloved late husband, Charles Baron, explaining her work :  http://youtu.be/h-6UsOaWnf8

Zierold Event delightful--Video excerpts!

Norman Zierold, with Rustin Larson interviewing him, regaled an audience of about 40 people with stories of   Hollywood greats, Norman's aunt in the Amana Colonies where he grew up, and an account of how he started the Transcendental Mediation technique. His books sold quickly after the event, which also featured homemade organic goodies.
The video is incomplete but give a flavor of the event: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-pdWFScBHNY
